IN MEMORY OF:
Rolland W. Lewis
|
Rolland W. Lewis, former businessman, entrepreneur, and Mayor of the City of Mt. Vernon, Illinois was a son
given by the Lord to Chester and Lillian (Fair) Lewis in Chicago Illinois on October 13, 1930. He passed away at his home
on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 9:34 am. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. The span of his earthly
pilgrimage was 81 years and 23 days. Today we rejoice in the knowledge that he has passed the barrier of time as we know it
and is forever at home with the Savior he faithfully served his entire earthly life.
On June 25, 1952 Rolland married Sally Watts who survives. Together, for more than 59 years, they experienced
the changing scenes of life in the joyous and fruitful companionship, which the Lord had entrusted to them.
Mr. Lewis was an active member and Lay Reader of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon. Rolland attended
Caldwell Grade School and graduated from Bowen High School on the south side of Chicago; after which he attended the first
two years at the University of Illinois Chicago Annex previously at Navy Pier. He loved animals and wanted to become a Veterinarian,
his calling to serve his country called louder to him. Rolland proudly served his country in the United State Marine Corps.
During the Korean War as a Gunnery Sgt., he spent 5 months in combat with the 1st Marine Division before being wounded and
spending several months recovering in a hospital in Japan.
In 1959, Mr. Lewis came to Mt. Vernon with his wife, Sally, and became active in his community. While being
a real estate manager, running his own construction company, Lewis & Farley Construction Co., starting and running House
de Lions, Ltd and participating in the upstart of a new company called Mr. Ice with his long time friend, David Flota, Rolland
still found time to be instrumental in bringing the YMCA to Mt. Vernon, as well as serving as it's president, later as the
vice president of the Southern Illinois YMCA, becoming a drive chairman for the United Fund in Jefferson County and was active
in the VFW, AMVETS, and American Legion.
He fell in love with politics and was elected as Mayor of Mt. Vernon as well as precinct committeeman in Shiloh
4. Rolland served as Mayor of Mt. Vernon from 1969-1977 and again from 1985-1997. To his many friends and admirers, Rolland
was known as Mr. Mt. Vernon or simply Mayor. Mayor Lewis served as past President of the Illinois Municipal League, helped
form the Southern Illinois Mayors Association (SIMA) which he served as President three times. Mt. Lewis served on the Illinois
Economic Board, Illinois Commission on Future of Public service, Environmental Financial Advisory Board for the Federal EPA
in Washington D.C. Mr. Lewis served on the Governor's Advisory Board under the Ogilvie Administration and the Illinois Law
Enforcement Administration as an appointee of Governor Thompson. He was also appointed by Governor Edger and Governor Ryan
and confirmed by the Senate as Chairman of the Board of Review for the Department of Employment for 14 years.
Rolland's passion was his family and politics, working tirelessly for the people of Mt. Vernon for over 40
years. He was always the optimist and felt a true civic responsibility during his many years of service to the people of Mt.
Vernon. He was beloved and respected by his family and by all those whose lives he touched. Rolland was an avid Cubs fan and
thoroughly enjoyed pointing out to his friends each time the Cubs beat the Cardinals. Although he was always being asked to
assist members of the community his state or nation, he always found time for his family and he always put his families wants
and needs before his own. He was a cherished and beloved husband, father and grandfather whose passing will be greatly mourned
but an astonishing life lived will be remembered forever.
Rolland Lewis is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Sally Lewis of Mt. Vernon; three sons, John Lewis
and wife Pam of Mt. Vernon, Brian Lewis and wife Kathy of Mt. Vernon and Robert Lewis of Tampa, Fl.; daughter-in-law Minda
